Something From Nothing is a Phase 1 episode of North Texas Explorer featuring the small Kaufman Country towns of Crandall and Combine. The premise of the episode was to show that seemingly uninteresting places had a story.

Local area history is discussed in downtown Crandall as well as a look at a house that was used in the filming of the 1967 Bonnie & Clyde movie. The topic of cotton farming is covered in an historic context and and a contemporary one as the Dietz Cotton Gin, a staple of commerce in the area, continued its existence as a restaurant.

A visit to the local sand and gravel pits sheds light on another local industry and the geology of the area. Devin stops by the river bottoms of the east fork of the Trinity River to discuss ecology and environment issues of the location. The episode ends with an interview of local area historian Ann Patterson.

Background Information[]

  • Production of a short segment for the NTTV series "NT Scene" happened concurrently with the river bottom sequence of the episode. Hosted by Devin, the segment would air later in the year on that series.
  • The Bonnie & Clyde movie house is no longer standing.
